Internship in Malta

Small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and 300 days of sunshine a year, this is the ideal destination for your next internship. We tell you all about Malta !

Malta is full of internship opportunities in all fields and if you want to gain experience abroad, this small island is bound to seduce you. Its location in the middle of the Mediterranean makes it a country close to France, while at the same time bringing you the change of scenery you are looking for when you move abroad. Moreover, it can be a good way to practice languages since, in addition to Maltese, English is recognized as an official language. Many locals also speak Italian.

Why should you do an internship in Malta?

There are many reasons, but Malta is indeed attracting more and more interns, especially French ones, every year. First of all for the language. Indeed, as said before, English is an official language of the island, and thus almost all the inhabitants speak it. It can also allow you to practice Italian if you have some knowledge of it.

The second reason is the multiplicity of offers. Malta is growing fast and many tourist and restaurant establishments have been established over the years. So if you are looking for an internship in tourism, customer relations, marketing, catering or business development, you will find it easy to find what you are looking for. Last but not least, the last reason may be the weather. Indeed, Malta has 300 days of sunshine a year, and being on an internship doesn\’t mean you can\’t enjoy it. During your free time, you will be able to enjoy the good weather, the turquoise water and the many cultural and other activities that the island offers.

How to find the best internship in Malta?

Most traineeships in Malta are unpaid. There is no legislation governing the remuneration of trainees. Thus many companies consider students as free labour that allows them to delegate work tasks that may be considered thankless. Therefore, we advise you to start by making a list of companies that correspond to the sector in which you are looking for your internship. This site will help you in your search: it is a directory of Maltese companies.

Unlike in France, it is quite easy to find personal information such as email addresses or phone numbers of people working in a company. You will be able to contact them directly by email. Don\’t forget that your CV must be in English, as well as your cover letter if you attach one. If you don\’t want to do your internship search yourself, many agencies offer internships in Malta. However, we advise you to check the agency you are passing through, as some of them are not very interested in the companies and offers posted on their websites. You can look through our offers, we offer internships in Malta ourselves. Our companies and offers are guaranteed to be of high quality and professional.

Internship formalities

First of all, it should be noted that the regulation in Malta for working hours is 40 hours per week. If you are a citizen of a European Union country or Switzerland (Croatia is an exception), you do not need a visa to come to Malta. An identity card or passport is sufficient to enter the country. There are a few administrative formalities to be completed in order to work there, but your host company will take care of these once you are there. If you have another nationality, you must obtain a visa and have a clean criminal record. The procedures for obtaining a visa will be carried out by the employer, although you will need to gather certain documents on your own. For more information, you can go to this page which will give you all the details.

How to find accommodation

If your internship lasts longer than 3 months or you wish to stay in Malta for more than 3 months, you will need a residence permit. This permit is free of charge for Europeans. It costs 25€ for other nationalities. You will need to provide :

The application form with a justification of the application.
2 passport-sized passport photos in colour and on a white background, authenticated by a person of legal capacity (police officer, judge, doctor, etc.).
An identity card (ID1A)
The CEA form. Don\’t make a mistake when choosing the form, each letter corresponds to a situation (A for workers, E for people married to a Malaysian, J for pensioners, M for students, P for permanent residents).
Searching for accommodation can be complicated from abroad. We suggest that you come some time before the start of your internship to visit the properties. Scams to foreigners are numerous. So do not book anything online before visiting the property in real life. Do not rely on photos which can be misleading and do not send money.

Several solutions are available to you regarding the accommodation you decide to rent:

Shared accommodation

This can be a good solution if you have a small budget, if you come with friends of your own or if you want to easily meet other people and thus be able to exchange ideas.

Rooms in a private home

Nowadays it is quite easy to find a room with a local family. This will reduce your housing budget and allow you to really immerse yourself in Maltese culture.

Studio

They are more and more rare and can be rented for around 400 to 600€/month. It fluctuates according to the season and the city where it is located. But they are a good alternative especially for students. If you want a bigger apartment, count at least 700€ if you want to live in a touristic area.
